Publicity Sketches

I produced these four sketches for the pitching session at the London Comics Festival in Autumn 2004. I think the original plan was to use these sketches in separate posters (Trainspotting style), to publicise the comic in local Glasgow and Edinburgh shops.

Reference Sketches

Shortly after I had finished a script for TwoDays which Jack (the creator of the TwoDays concept and co-plotter of the comic) was happy with, I produced the following quick sketches. These really served two purposes; to solidify my ideas on the appearances of the characters, and to help show Jack how the world of TwoDays would look 'on paper'.

Firstly, the many guises of Black the younger:

While creating the appearance and mannerisms of the supporting characters, I found it helped to visualise them in terms of actual people. For example, the malevolent Tito Keepe was loosely based on the character of Josh Lyman (played by Bradley Whitford) from the tv show 'The West Wing'. I always thought his mix of fierce intelligence, wit and arrogance would make a great villain!

After much consideration, Agent Sundae's characteristics were styled after Jack Black.

And last but not least, I always thought of the Mysterious Stranger in terms of the Goblin King himself, David Bowie.

Finally, a collection of sketches of present day Black. Not based on anyone in particular, although his beard may have been inspired by some of co-creator Jack's more hirsute days.
